The opportunities for lay ministry at St. Michael's are virtually unlimited. We are each blessed with one or more God-given gifts and talents. The following descriptions of lay ministries at St. Michael's, prepared by the Lay Ministry Commission, is only a sample of the areas in which members can volunteer to help with God's work. If you have an interest which is not listed below, please don't hesitate to discuss your ideas with the Rector or a member of the appropriate Commission. Significant new ministries often begin with a mere suggestion from a member.
Remember, the work of the church benefits from every conceivable talent. Don't miss an opportunity to participate just because your special interest isn't mentioned below. All members of the congregation are invited to join in the ministry at St. Michael's as an expression of their stewardship of time, energy and talent. Assist in serving the Tuesday evening meal to volunteer summer groups June through August. Provide other assistance as needed to Work Camp projects, Migrant Headstart Program, and After School programs.

Tutor an assigned client in basic reading skills using provided materials. Preparation: Attend a training course offered periodically in the community.

An ecumenical prison ministry where a team to host a Wednesday through Sunday ministry event at a state prison located in Ridgeville. Participants must have attended a Cursillo weekend.

Intensive training provided for the healing ministry. With a partner, pray with individuals who come for prayer during and after 10:30 or 6:00 p.m. services. Participate in special events and during Days of Healing Prayer which are offered several times a year. Prayer ministers participate in missions held in other churches including healing missions to the Ukraine.

Purpose: To provide for parishioners of all ages a well rounded program of regular learning opportunities and special educational events through which the Christian Faith may be understood and the Christian Life explored, and to encourage all members of St. Michael's to develop habits of personal study of Holy Scripture and Christian literature which will help them grow toward Christian maturity.

Volunteer opportunities within Children’s Ministry
Shepherd: Focuses primarily on developing relationships with children and their parents and provides continuity for children from week to week. Works specifically with children who need one-on-one attention. Scheduled approximately three out of four Sundays per month. No lesson preparation required. Works in Sunday schools and/or children’s worship services.
Sunday School Teacher: Prepares for and teaches lesson on a rotating basis (approximately once every three to four weeks). 3-4 per age/grade level.
Children’s Worship Leaders: Prepares for and teaches lesson/leads worship on a rotating basis (approximately once every three to four weeks). 3-4 per age/grade level. Available for Nursery, Little Lambs and Big Kids Worship.
Children’s Worship Music Leaders: Leads or helps lead children in worship music on a rotating basis.
Substitute: Substitutes are available to fill in as a Shepherd or as a teacher on a “as needed” basis.
Age-level Coordinators: Volunteers interested in this position have a heart for a specific age-level ministry (nursery, preschool or elementary) and help coordinate and plan Christian formation within that age-level. The three age-level coordinators will meet with the DCF as well as their individual teams to ensure smooth transitions from one age-level to the next and will be a parent liaison within their specific age-level ministry.
Parent Monitor: All parents whose children regularly attend Children’s Ministry programs are asked to serve in this capacity as an extra pair of hands and eyes on a rotating basis (approximately once every 4-6 weeks). Monitors are needed for the Nursery, Little Lambs Worship Service and the Big Kidz Worship Service. Every effort is made to spread out the parent monitor rotation for parents with more than one child to prevent over scheduling.
Children’s Christmas Pageant Volunteer: Includes individuals who are interested in working with children and their families to stage the annual St. Michael’s Christmas Pageant. Duties and schedule varies.
“Time and Talents” Volunteer: Includes individuals with a heart for serving in Children’s Ministry in whatever capacity is needed. These are very special volunteers who are willing to give of their time and/or of their talents to minister to the children, families and other volunteers in Children’s Ministry—Praise God for you!

Purpose: To provide for the regular teaching of principles of Christian stewardship to the congregation, stressing the importance of total response through faith, worship, prayer, work, and financial sacrifice. To encourage proportionate giving, based on the tithe, for God's work through St. Michael's and elsewhere; and to insure that funds given through the parish are wisely spent or invested, and that proper records are kept and to recommend financing options to the Vestry when major expenditures are considered.

When nominated by the nominating committee or at the Annual Meeting, offer to serve a two-year term as Junior or Senior Warden (parish lay leaders), a three-year term as a member of the Vestry (parish legal agents and governing board), or as a delegate to the annual Diocesan Convention, usually held Friday - Saturday in March at various locations in the Diocese.

With special qualifications in investment management and election by the Vestry, offer to serve a five-year term as Trustee of the parish Endowment Fund. One new member per year.
A significant number of special events occur throughout the year at St. Michael's. These events provide not only a time for parishioners to have fellowship and worship together, but also an excellent opportunity for lay ministry. Each event requires coordinators and assistants. Many also require food preparation and service. Volunteering to assist in one or more of these annual events can be especially appropriate for individuals who prefer to work on defined projects for several hours or several days.
Evangelism Event: A special opportunity to gather as a parish family for an evening meal and to hear an exciting speaker.
Kanuga Weekend: A weekend (Friday - Sunday) at Kanuga, a regional Episcopal conference center in the North Carolina mountains near Hendersonville. This event, usually scheduled for late winter/early spring, offers individuals of all ages an opportunity to share quality time with other parishioners. Meals are provided and some activities are planned, however, participants have free time to enjoy hiking, outlet shopping.
Shrove Tuesday: Pancake Supper, Shrove Tuesday
Easter Sunday Brunch: A festive, parish breakfast buffet on Easter morning prior to the 10:30 a.m. service.
Vacation Bible School: A week of classes, crafts, music and worship for children aged 3 - 12, daily from 9 till 12, usually scheduled for early June. Teachers and activity leaders are especially needed for this very popular event.
Michaelmas Celebration: Weekend celebration around Feast Day of our patron saint, St. Michael and All Angels.
Blessing of Animals: Annual service scheduled on a Sunday near the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi. How many times do you get to worship with your pets? Bring your dog, cat, parakeet, etc. and have them blessed during a short service dedicated to the work of St. Francis.
Christmas Pageant: A traditional costumed tableaux with children of all ages enacting the birth of Christ. Held annually on Christmas Eve at 5 p.m.
