The Healing Ministry at St. Michael’s Church
The healing ministry at St. Michael’s Church was started and continually
encouraged by the Rector. The ministry has grown through the guidance and
leadership of his Assistant for Pastoral Care. It has been an integral part
of the life and mission of the church since 1986. All of the clergy are actively
involved and supported by a team of about seventy prayer ministers.
Prayer Ministry at St. Michael’s Church - Brochure
Furnace Room of Prayer - This gathering of prayer warriors meets one hour prior to worship on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. in the lower level of the bell tower in order to pray for our worship. Perhaps you’ve noticed some of these prayer warriors with their lapel pins that say “Furnace Room Rocks.” No special training is required except to have a heart for prayer and a willingness to offer it.
Daughters of the King - This international order of Anglican women is open to all of those women who want to commit to a rule of life that includes regular intercessory prayer. Although St. Michael’s chapter is presently small, the potential for growth is great. If you are interested in this ministry and want to know more please contact the church office and either Heather Bryan or Lee Horton will contact you.
The International Order of St Luke the Physician - St. Michael’s chapter of OSL exists primarily to provide the training offered in the introductory course of the Order. At St. Michael’s, we use this basic course of biblical study on the healing ministry of Jesus as a precursor and foundation for further training to be either a Prayer Minister or a Stephen Minister. Offered at least annually, meeting in a weekly format for several months, this course is open to all. The basic course can also be completed privately through direct registration with the national office of the Order.
Prayer Ministers - This group of Prayer Ministers is commissioned for the ministry of offering prayer during worship services, Days of Healing Prayer, and through special prayer appointments, through extensive training using the materials of Christian Healing Ministries based out of Jacksonville, Florida. The minimum requirements to be considered for this ministry are completion of the course for OSL, and completion of the School of Healing Prayer, Level I. Additionally, the clergy and a core group of experienced prayer ministers are involved in the discernment of God’s call on those for this ministry. Prayer Ministers are assigned in teams of two to offer healing prayer at Sunday services.
School of Healing Prayer - Using the materials of Christian Healing Ministries, the School of Healing Prayer is offered at three different progressive levels. Participation at any level is by application and selection. Level I training is a mandatory prerequisite for involvement in Prayer Ministry, and it is a prerequisite for any further participation in Level II or Level III. Courses meet weekly and generally begin in the early fall and late winter. Anyone interested in this training should contact the Pastoral Care office at the church.
Stephen Ministry - This is a new ministry at St. Michael’s only begun in the fall of 2008 with the first class of Stephen Ministers. At St. Michael’s, Stephen Ministry participants are also asked to complete the basic course of OSL to have the common grounding in a basic bible study on the healing ministry of Jesus. This can be completed through a formal class or through private study. Following the completion of 50 hours of instruction, and the commitment to supervisory practicums, Stephen Ministers provide pastoral care to parishioners in their homes at times of crisis and acute need. It is a ministry of presence, listening and caring for one another. Applications for this training are available through the Pastoral Care office.
Day of Healing Prayer - These regularly scheduled opportunities to hear teachings on prayer, as well as ample opportunity to receive prayer, are offered for our parishioners as well as the wider community as an outreach of sharing the healing power of God’s love as poured out through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Typically four of these are offered annually on Saturdays, in or near the months of January, May, July and November. Some also have featured special speakers, that in the past have included Norma Dearing, Rick Belser, Barbara Shlemon Ryan, Nigel Mumford and Joanne Ellison. For further information on the present schedule, contact the Pastoral Care office.
Healing Missions
St. Michael’s has enjoyed a multi-year relationship with the people of the Ukraine by sending an annual Healing Mission team since 2004. Additionally, healing missions have been sent to other churches within the diocese and the wider domestic church. Participation in these opportunities is by application and selection from among those trained prayer ministers, with consideration also offered to others.
Healing Service - St. Michael’s offers a weekly healing service on Thursdays that includes Holy Communion and the opportunity for the laying on of hands with anointing and prayers for healing. All are welcome.
Needing Prayer? Prayers by Appointment - Anyone who desires to receive personal prayer (usually with a team of two or more prayer ministers) may make an appointment by calling the Pastoral Care office at the church at 723-0603, or by sending an email to heal@stmichaelschurch.net
Prayers on Sunday - During and after services on Sunday, teams of trained and experienced Prayer Ministers are available in designated pews to offer prayers of intercession for healing or any other need.
Prayer Cards - Green prayer cards are available for you to share whatever prayer concerns may be on your heart. These can be placed in the offering, placed into a prayer box found in the church, or sent to the church office. They will be read by the clergy and prayer ministers so that the shared concerns can be prayed over.
Prayers of the People - Sunday prayers during worship include intercessions for the healing of the sick, remembrance of the dead, and thanksgivings for births and marriages. Those desiring to have names included in these publicly read prayers should contact the Pastoral Care office. All requests require permission of the individual to be prayed for or the person’s family.
Prayer Request Chain - To place someone on the Prayer Chain, contact the Pastoral Care office. This information will be shared with either the Prayer Ministers via email or through a telephone Prayer Chain among an additional volunteer group of intercessors. The email distribution provides a wider sharing of the concerns while the telephone distribution remains more private and discreet. The choice remains that of the requester. All requests require permission of the individual to be prayed for or the person’s family.
