Volunteer opportunities within Children’s Ministry
Shepherd: Focuses primarily on developing relationships with children and their parents and provides continuity for children from week to week. Works specifically with children who need one-on-one attention. Scheduled approximately three out of four Sundays per month. No lesson preparation required. Works in Sunday schools and/or children’s worship services.
Sunday School Teacher: Prepares for and teaches lesson on a rotating basis (approximately once every three to four weeks). 3-4 per age/grade level.
Children’s Worship Leaders: Prepares for and teaches lesson/leads worship on a rotating basis (approximately once every three to four weeks). 3-4 per age/grade level. Available for Nursery, Little Lambs and Big Kids Worship.
Children’s Worship Music Leaders: Leads or helps lead children in worship music on a rotating basis.
Substitute: Substitutes are available to fill in as a Shepherd or as a teacher on a “as needed” basis.
Age-level Coordinators: Volunteers interested in this position have a heart for a specific age-level ministry (nursery, preschool or elementary) and help coordinate and plan Christian formation within that age-level. The three age-level coordinators will meet with the DCF as well as their individual teams to ensure smooth transitions from one age-level to the next and will be a parent liaison within their specific age-level ministry.
Parent Monitor: All parents whose children regularly attend Children’s Ministry programs are asked to serve in this capacity as an extra pair of hands and eyes on a rotating basis (approximately once every 4-6 weeks). Monitors are needed for the Nursery, Little Lambs Worship Service and the Big Kidz Worship Service. Every effort is made to spread out the parent monitor rotation for parents with more than one child to prevent over scheduling.
Children’s Christmas Pageant Volunteer: Includes individuals who are interested in working with children and their families to stage the annual St. Michael’s Christmas Pageant. Duties and schedule varies.
“Time and Talents” Volunteer: Includes individuals with a heart for serving in Children’s Ministry in whatever capacity is needed. These are very special volunteers who are willing to give of their time and/or of their talents to minister to the children, families and other volunteers in Children’s Ministry—Praise God for you!

Morning Prayer Sundays are on the last Sunday of each month and the children’s ministry opportunities differ from regular Holy Communion Sundays. On Morning Prayer Sundays, children ages 3 through 11 go with their parents to church for the first half of the service. During the hymn that follows the announcements, one of the adult volunteers, holding a cross, will lead the elementary children up the center aisle, out the door of the sacristy and over to the Belser Building across the church yard.
Elementary-aged children will go directly to the Kinloch Room on the first floor for the Big Kidz Worship Service. Elementary students will remain in the Kinloch Room to be picked up by parents. Please instruct your children to remain in the Kinloch Room until you arrive.
Children ages 3-5 should be taken by their parents to the Little Lambs Service located in the Youth Room on the second floor of the Belser Building. Please be patient as these children are checked in by a volunteer. Following the 10:30 service, parents may pick up their preschool-aged children in the Youth Room. ~ Amy Smith
