Youth
Our Vision
Enjoying and proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ which transforms our homes, the Holy City, the Hurting Coast, and the Hungering World.
Our Identity
We are a group of Middle (6-8th grades) and High School (9-12th grades) students who gather regularly for biblical teaching, gospel-centered community, and evangelistic outreach.
But we are far more than just a group of Middle and High School students. We are a body of families varying in great degrees, but we all gather in unity around the gospel. “So we, though many, are one body in Christ, individually members of one another” – Romans 12:5. We strive to make disciples not just of teenagers, but families of teenagers. We seek to restore the parent(s) to their God-given place as the primary spiritual teacher of their children (Deuteronomy 6). We do this by having it be a central value of who we are, by seeking to always set parents up to be the heroes, and by involving and communicating with parents regularly in our ministry. In addition to this, in all our ministries at St. Michaels, we value worshipping at home, which we define as “treasuring Christ in our homes through corporate study of Scripture, reflection, and prayer.”
Our Structure
“Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” John 4:10

- Meet Justin Hare, Youth Minister by Peg Eastman Justin Hare’s roots at St. Michael’s church run deep. His grandparents, the late J. C. Hare, and Connie Hare attended St. Michael’s as did his parents. He remembers fondly coming to the church offices as a young child and being quizzed on mathematics and helping his grandmother stuff the Messenger before it…
- Lowcountry Family Cookout with Simon Guillebaud Nothing goes better with the new fall season than a fun, relaxed cookout! Sunny and 75 degrees made for a picture perfect time at Dave and Linda Soutter’s house on the intracoastal waterway, where nearly 35 folks gathered to enjoy some fellowship, dinner, and a message from Simon Guillebaud. We had a variety of fun…
- St. Michael’s Students Loving Christ through some Local Service With the dense fog enveloping downtown Charleston and the surrounding areas, St. Michaelites filtered into the parking lot of the Church of the Holy Communion the morning of Saturday, October 9th. Several of St. Michael’s students and their parents joined the team at Holy Communion to pack and serve food purchased and stored at the…
- Embracing the Privilege “How was school?” “Fine.” “How was Sunday School?” “Good.” “How was practice?” “Alright.” “What do you want for dinner?” “I don’t care.” Does this resonate with you? If it does, don’t worry I don’t have the gift of prophesy; its just that I’ve been on the giving-end of these one-word responses, sadly, for the majority…
- 21st Century Drive-In Movies! 8 folks from the Student Ministries of St. Michael’s left the church parking lot on a brisk Saturday night to head down to Beaufort to watch some movies on the big screen at the Highway 21 Drive-In movie theater! In 1958 when drive-ins were at their peak, there were somewhere between 4,000-5,000 of them in…

- Youth Testimony I have so many things to be grateful for, especially in this holiday season. St. Michael’s is certainly at the top of my list. I initially came to St. Michael’s about a year ago, but did not commit to coming regularly until August of this year. Church has always been at the center of my…
- Jesus Weekend 2011 I love this retreat. It is my absolute favorite that the Diocese puts on all year for a number of reasons. First, taking an in-depth look into the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus always has some amazing outshoots. Secondly, it is purposely quieter and more contemplative which allows everyone to really wrestle with answering…
- Recap – Pantry Feb. 2011 Some of the youth and their families had a great return visit to the Church of the Holy Communion Feb 11. With about 15 people total at 7am, many hands made light work of packing groceries for the needy in the community. The “Pantry” which Holy Communion clears out every month has been filled with…
- Reflection on St. Michael’s Youth Group Camping and Kayaking Weekend From April 8-10 we took a group of students on a kayaking and camping weekend through Camp St. Christopher. Justin, Molly, and I were the leaders as well as two very well equipped leaders from St. Christopher’s Outdoor Encounters program. All we had to do was bring our clothes and other basic necessities as they…
- Youth Holy Week Reflection with Carter Falk This year’s Holy Week was particularly engaging for a number of reasons. Obviously, the actors intensified the dramatic element of Holy Week, but the youth were also affected in other ways. From the Stations of the Cross on Friday to the Maundy Thursday dinner and stripping of the altar, a number of youth were dramatically…
- Reflection on Crisis Ministries Youth Service Meal On May 12 the youth and their families were able to serve a meal for the Family Center at Crisis Ministries. It was the first time we have done this since I’ve been on board and on the whole, it was a wonderful time! The Rev. Al himself was able to join us in addition…
- Youth Confirmation Testimonies We have had an AMAZING Confirmation class this year. They have done so much and are wonder children of God! It has been an honor to see each of them grow this year in their faith! From attending intense classes and engaging through tough material to the retreat called Jesus Weekend at Camp St. Christopher,…
- Shagging to the Glory of God On July 15, the Kinloch Room was a lively place! You may have thought you were on a Lowcountry beach a half-century ago instead of a in a church parish hall, thanks to our decorations team of Amy Smith, her mother, Cameron Smith, Nicole Nicholson, Charlotte Nicholson, and Julia McElhinney, and countless others who donated…

- What do we pray our students will look like? Before we start to plan our curricula, we want a clear vision of what we hope our graduates will look like. I highly recommend you do this in your own families – set goals, create a vision together, and implement strategies – so you can reflect and assess well on the past and spend your…
- What do we study? “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind” - Jesus Many understand that in order to love God, we must do so with our all hearts; few understand what it means to love Him with all their minds. Yet, these are the ones who not only…
- Reflection on The Joyful Impossibility by Justin Hare Based on this article In my time working with teenagers and their families, one of the most common things I hear can be summed up in one word – impossible. From the tyranny of our schools, our coaches, our jobs, and heaven help us, even our churches, where is the time for our family? “It’s…
- More than just Paintball On Saturday Oct 29, children, youth, young adults, and parents gathered in North Charleston for our first church-wide paintball and picnic! Men, women, young and the young-at-heart all gathered at 9:30am for a day of fun and fellowship! It was certainly a colorful day, due to both the effect of well-aimed paintballs and the weather.…
- Mondo Weekend Reflection From October 14th through 16th myself and Ana Catherine as leaders had the great opportunity to take Wimberly Zadig, Emily Burnett, Renee Dougherty, Josiah Vice and Gus Crump (From St. Philips) to Mondo Weekend out at Camp St. Christopher. We left Friday afternoon and returned Sunday for the parish wide meeting. The theme for the…
- Re:Generate 2011 Reflection ~ High School Fall Retreat About 200 high school students from across the Diocese met at Camp St. Christopher Nov 11-13 to hear Simon Guillebaud teach on Colossians 1:12-14. The theme of this weekend was “Redemption,” and it was in these verses that Paul was praying for the church at Colossae. Paul’s prayer was that the believers there (we can…
- Recap of High School Lock-In After a long, tough week of intense exams, St. Michael’s High School students had some time to unwind with each other on St. Michael’s Campus. Movie marathons, a hefty amount of Chick-Fil-A, mass consumption of candy and soda, and lots of fun pretty much summed up this evening. Glow-In-The-Dark Hide and Seek was perhaps the…
- Confirmation Classes begin Jan. 15 Confirmation Classes for Students begin January 15th (Not January 8th as broadcasted originally in Justin’s Confirmation Packet due to Vision Sunday!). Classes will end March 25 as previously communicated though. These classes are from 9:20am (SHARP!) to 10:20am every Sunday, except Feb 19 due to our Confirmation Retreat (Jesus Weekend). Our meeting space will fluctuate…
- Parenting Teenagers Course Reflection Below is a testimony of Kimberly and Chris Moss’s experience with our first annual Parenting Teenagers Class: What a journey we find ourselves on as parents and what a wonderful experience to be able to travel that path in Christ with like-minded parents. We have cherished the time we have spent in the parenting class…
- GIC 2012 Youth Reflection During the GIC the students of St. Michael’s were brought to see how we are missionaries without having to travel by plane, boat, or donkey. We, as teens and their families, took to the streets of our own city to experience the righteousness of God. We were brought face to face with the reality of…
- Jesus Weekend Reflection This year’s Confirmation class of 7 went out to Camp St. Christopher for my favorite retreat we do as a Diocese – Jesus Weekend. This is an intense couple of days where we go through the life, death , and resurrection of Jesus. This year was a bit different as we specifically looked through Mark’s…
- 5th-6th Grade Lenten Lock-In 2012 With just over 20 folks piling into St. Michael’s Belser Building Friday evening, many had no idea what was in store. 5th and 6th graders brought their sleeping gear, Bibles, journals, and suitcases in for this annual event where we aim to familiarize the 5th graders with the youth ministry. This year did not disappoint!…
- When Guilt is Good I love Lent. And Lent gets a bad rap. It drives me nuts that we in the church can make Lent to be almost a “second wave” for our recently forgotten New Year’s Resolutions (I am guilty of this!). Simply put, New Year’s Resolutions are primarily about us; Lent is primarily about Jesus. It also…
- Madison McNeill’s Testimony Below is a testimony by one of our youth – Madison McNeill – given at a Lenten Tuesday morning breakfast service. Madison is a delightful young woman who loves the Lord and St. Michael’s. She also loves tennis and playing competitively, especially with her father, Dan. I hope you are blessed by her story! –…
