The Challenges of Parking in Charleston

If you have ever attended an event at St. Michael’s Church, you have probably been challenged with finding a place to park.  When looking for a place to park, several options are available to all St. Michael’s parishioners.

The parking lot behind Society Hall:  St. Michael’s leases this space 24/7 for church business only.  If you are downtown for purposes other than onsite ministry at St. Michael’s, please save the spaces for those who work, volunteer or attend a class during the week.  The parking lot is not available to St. Michaelites on the second Tuesday of the month, the first Tuesday after Easter and the third Friday in January.

Parking at the Battery:  Parking is free around White Point Gardens and is only a five-block walk to St. Michael’s Church.  Often the staff parks and walks when the parking lot is not available or full.

Parking on the Street:  Metered parking is available on Broad Street.  On Sunday, the metered parking is free.

The County Parking Garage:  Located just one-half block north of St. Michael’s, the county parking garage is free for 3 hours on Sunday when you present a bulletin from the Sunday service.  During the week, standard rates apply.

Although the parking in the other lots along St. Michael’s Alley may look vacant, every space is leased 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Parking in one of those spots would be at your own risk as many of those lots do tow cars that do not belong in the space.

On Sundays, we would love to have the lot behind Society Hall available for the elderly and handicapped.  If you can easily walk, please consider parking on the street or in the parking garage.

We wish we had additional options and hope that the ideas above will be helpful as you come to St. Michael’s Church.  Should you have any questions regarding the parking alternatives, please contact the Office Manager, Gretchen Hauser, or the Property Manager, Rob McRae.
