St. Michael’s Church is the oldest church building on the Charleston peninsula. It was first commissioned 275 years ago and remains today as one of the most enduring symbols of the city’s spiritual and civic life. The church was 25 years old in 1776 when five of its parishioners played a prominent role in the founding of the country. Two signed the Declaration of Independence and three were principles in the Continental Congress that drafted and signed the Constitution in 1787.

Throughout the year, we will commemorate the church’s rich history in a variety of ways.
• Learn about the founding of St. Michael’s Parish via the poster that will be displayed in the Narthex throughout the month.
Save these dates for upcoming activities:
June 27. The annual Palmetto Society celebration of Carolina Day at St. Michael’s Church will be observed with the priests wearing period attire.
July 5. The services will commemorate the founding of our country 250 years ago. During the 11:00 service there will be an official dedication of a bronze wall plaque that depicts the five St. Michael’s parishioners who signed the Declaration of Independence and Constitution of the United States. A special ringing of the bells will be performed after the service.
