So What? Sunday
Preacher: The Rev. Edward T. McNabb, Jr. Series: Summer Lectionary Scripture: John 3:1–16
“So, preacher, explain The Holy Trinity.” In a way it’s a trick question and over the years has provided the grist for many a “snoozer” sermon. (I make no promises!) I will say in the yearly rhythm of our pattern of worship Trinity Sunday is the culmination of the five season first half of the year and the pivot point for the one season second half. (Riveting thus far, right?) Still…explain The Holy Trinity? Here’s a clue via more questions: explain your spouse, explain your kids, explain your parents, explain your pals … explain yourself. Stops us dead in our tracks, doesn’t it. Knowing someone defies explanation. On Trinity Sunday the fullness of God stands with us in a pivotal place: “Here I Am. Do you want to know me or would you rather just stand and stay stuck in theological pondering? Ball in your court.”
