The Good Shepherd

Scripture: Psalm 23, John 10:11–16

In the Gospel of John, the story of the Good Shepherd is set against a backdrop of miraculous signs and deep division, particularly following Jesus' healing of a man born blind, which incites debate among the Pharisees and the public. This healing is more than a demonstration of divine power; it is a pivotal sign revealing Jesus as the Messiah, the bringer of light and life, and prefigures His declaration as the Good Shepherd in John 10:11. Here, Jesus contrasts His sacrificial, caring nature with the self-serving Pharisees, enhancing the theme of God's tender care depicted through the shepherd-sheep imagery prevalent in Hebrew Scriptures. This declaration not only asserts His authority and aligns Him with Israel's God but also highlights His mission to lay down His life for the sheep, guiding them to salvation and underscoring John's overarching message: belief in Jesus as the Christ grants eternal life.
