Called Out and Calling Others

January 15, 2023 Preacher: The Rev. Alfred T. K. Zadig Jr Series: Matthew

Scripture: Matthew 4:12–23, Isaiah 9:1–3

Okay, Christmas is over, the new year is upon us, are we any different this year than we were last year?  Today as we enter Matthew 4, we find Jesus beginning his earthly ministry as King, by being called out and calling others.

In his book: The Call:  Finding and Fulfilling the Central Purpose of Your Life, Dr. Os Guiness writes:

“Calling is the truth that God calls us to himself so decisively that everything we are, everything we do, and everything we have is invested with a special devotion and dynamism lived out as a response to His summons and service…yet Calling is not only a matter of being and doing what we are but also of becoming what we are not yet but are called to be.”

Guinness then offers these chilling words:  “This world is a great sculptor’s shop. We are the statues and there is a rumor going round the shop that some of us are some day going to come to life.”

As we enter this new year, let’s re-examine our calls by going with Jesus to Capernaum and placing ourselves into the people of Peter, Andrew, James and John!
